Humane Society is set to open at Rockmart Highway in January

Beginning in the coming year, the Cedartown-Polk County Humane Society will have a permanent place to feel at home.

Humane Society president Charlotte Harrison told Cedartown Kiwanis Club in a brief update that plans are to start operations at 3416 Rockmart Highway after the start of the new year.

Harrison announced that the Humane Society’s new location will open in January 2022 as part of work to transform a home into a safe place for dogs and cats in Polk County.

Construction on the home and donated buildings is nearing completion, including a newly paved parking lot on the Rockmart Freeway.

She said the delays in temporarily hosting the dog and cat kennels have had an impact on their opening, but expectations are that they will arrive soon and no longer cause problems with opening plans.

“We have completely moved from our location on Adamson Road,” said Harrison and thanked the community and individuals like Mike Hunter for their help in making the most possible. She also thanked Alice and Elmo Carter who have graciously allowed the Humane Society to use their building for the past four years.

This includes the family of Kerry Hall, who donated their property to the organization after his death earlier this year. She was an animal lover who took care of dozens of pets during her life in her old home.

The 4.7 acres include a house, a Quonset-style structure, two other outbuildings which are being redeveloped to house and provide a variety of other services to needy animals.
